There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities in addition to the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
