There is a captivating history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino gambling is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat casino, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel compound that features many amenities in addition to the gambling den, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
